What's Next for Kelvin?

So the Kelvin building is all locked up, and the Kelvin board has been replaced by the Bronx Park board and by several residents who are still working for a future for Kelvin. So what happens now?

The Bronx Park clubhouse will be closing in the spring while a new and larger clubhouse is built. During this time the sports and bingo will continue, but there will be no room for additional community programming. And Mayor Sam Katz and the majority of city councillors have made it clear that it's better to keep the Kelvin clubhouse building boarded up than allow it for use during the construction period. The SaveKelvin volunteers are currently looking into another possibility for programming space, but nothing has been firmly established at this point.

The Manitoba Métis Federation has generously offered to fund programming at Kelvin for an additional two years, but they are being ignored by the mayor and his pocket of councillors. I suppose the mayor and friends believe that they can simply snub all of the community organizations who want to make Winnipeg a better place; and I suppose that the mayor doesn't think that his actions will result in less being achieved in Winnipeg. This situation is very similar to when a man who would beat his dog whenever he comes, but doesn't understand why that dog no longer comes when he calls.

So the current status of Kelvin is that the clubhouse if boarded up, the dressing room building is open, and there is supposed to be a new "fieldhouse" built on the Kelvin grounds. And meanwhile, we are looking at some other options for maintaining community programming at Kelvin.

We'll keep you updated on this site and through the Kelvin mailing list as things develop.
